This report is the result of a desk review by DFID and FAO to research the theoretical background literature on sustainable livelihoods and the current context of information and communication, to assist with the preparation of a strategic programme on information in support of sustainable livelihoods. The report looks at the stakeholders involved in using information at different levels, and the importance of information and communication in support of decision making at every level. The authors place particular emphasis on the role of existing information systems in support of livelihoods and how to build on them. Conclusions and recommendations are presented on the key issues that policy-makers should consider when designing and implementing information and communication programmes or adopting livelihoods approaches for rural development and food security interventions (Adapted from authors).
