This is an OECD e-book of economic research based on papers from a May 2001 conference at the University of Bologna’s School of Development and Institutional Change providing insights from a number of contributors. Part One of the e-book addresses concerns on the Internet and the organisation of global markets, with papers on value chains and e-commerce for development. The following section looks at sectoral analyses of automobile and coffee e-commerce initiatives. The final section considers case studies of local experiments in Andhra Pradesh, India; the Grameen Bank Village Pay Phone project in Bangladesh; and local content creation in South Africa. Overall, these pieces highlight some of the major implications of e-commerce for developing countries which are key to policy-makers globally.
