Wikia is a search engine project that seeks to challenge the established way of building search engines today, which has been traditionally a secretive world of closely guarded algorithms and data. The article looks at the Wikia model for building a search engine, which follows a collaborative approach to the problem as well as making the algorithm and data public to leverage the power of open source. Thus Wikia seeks to provide a search service which will be comparable to or even better than established players like Google, and all at a fraction of the cost. If successful, this will greatly benefit people and organisations seeking to build or use a search service which has become almost ubiquitous in today's world.
