The article discusses the decision by a European court on the appeal which was filed by Microsoft against the record fine earlier imposed on it by the European Commission. The Commission had found Microsoft guilty of abusing its dominant position in order to negatively impact rivals in server software and certain products such as media players. The subsequent appeal has been effectively rejected by the court handling this case and Microsoft has to now comply with the orders regarding payment of the fine and legal costs as well as changing its monopolist behaviour. This is a landmark ruling which is expected to have a profound effect on subsequent anti-trust cases involving companies exhibiting dominant behaviour and in the long run will hopefully lead to a more level playing and fair field in such businesses.
