Wi-fi health study gets go ahead

The United Kingdom's Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced plans to conduct research on low-level radiation emissions of wi-fi access points and wireless links on computers. The research, which will be published online and submitted to peer-reviewed journals, aims to determine how these emissions affect consumer health and establish a baseline of exposure for the average person to wi-fi networks.

The tele-trail to Africa

A recent collaboration between India and the African Union under the aegis of the Pan-African E-network Project aimed at developing ICT infrastructure across the African continent holds significant promise. Under the initiative, India will donate $1bn to connect 53 African countries through a satellite and fibre optic network to promote tele-medicine and tele-education programmes.

An open source, user friendly, flexible freeware, the district health information systems software (DHIS) has been developed by the Health Information Systems Programme (HISP) for use in a public health MIS. DHIS supports functions of accurate and valid data collection, aggregation, storing, sharing, transmission, analysis, reporting, display and use of health data at and between every level of a local health system.

This article explores the work of SAATHII - Solidarity and Action Against the HIV Infection in India - a non-profit organisation launched in 2000 to facilitate dialogue among the diverse sectors involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in India. The author reports on the organisation's use of various ICTs to provide information to activists, volunteers, NGO programme personnel, funders and policy makers, and also examines the lessons learned so far.
